Module review for my Year 3 Modules

Year 3 was really a great and memorable year. Exchange and Industrial Attachment, my CAP did not move an inch during this entire year.

Year 3 Semester 1

Embarked on the coveted Student Exchange Programme (SEP) to KTH Royal Institute of Technology, Stockholm, Sweden.

Why should you go on a Student Exchange Programme?
  1. You get to experience a student life in another university. Such an experience is very different from travelling to a country on a holiday.
  2. You get to freeze your CAP. All modules taken while on SEP will be graded on a Pass/Fail basis and will not be counted towards your cap. You will just have to pass the modules which you took. (So take all the difficult technical elective modules while on SEP!)

If you're afraid of the cost, here's a breakdown of my total expenditure during the semester. Note that my living expenditure was very low because I did not travel or eat out. I cooked every meal and was very prudent on my spending.

Expenditure
Accommodation 5 months
$3,300
Living expenditure
$1,700
Air Tickets
$1,100
Total:
$6,100

Of course you may apply for funding and bursaries to offset this amount. I applied for the NASA Exchange Scholarship through NUS (I heard that NUS gives this funding to almost everybody, not too sure). This effectively offset my expenditure by $2,500.

Year 3 Semester 2

EG3611 Industrial attachment (Internship) semester. I did not take any evening modules because I reckoned that I would be too tired after work to even concentrate.

  1. May I ask what are the modules you took for SEP at KTH?

    1. Hello, thanks for asking. I applied for internships through the school portal. In my resume, I mentioned that i'm on exchange and will be back on xx date. Also because of time difference, interviews are preferbly scheduled after 1pm sg time. I'll recommend you to include your skype. The companies should be understanding enough. In fact most of my interviews were held through skype so minimally bring a formal top to your exchange :) All the best!

    2. I actually also have to take EG2401 in year 3... is it better to take it in yr 3 sem 1 during internship or during SEP? Cuz like I’m kinda worried that it’ll be hard to apply for jobs while on SEP... and yet again some companies might not allow evening modules.

    3. Yes, since SEP is pass/fail, i'll recommend taking it during SEP. I know of friends who took 6-7 modules for SEP. Even if the job allows for evening modules, I feel that its really tiring after a whole day's work to still attend lectures. Also do consider the travel time from your workplace to NUS. These are some important factors to consider.

  4. Hi, may I ask how could you go to KTH at sem 1. I thought its academic calendar is not suitable with NUS (it's sem 1 end 2 weeks after sem 2 NUS has begun)

    1. Yes indeed. I did my travel before the semester started, and returned immediately when the semester ended. It was okay because I was on industrial attachment for sem 2. What I did was to write in to our own department to check if it was okay, and I just started & ended my IA 2 weeks later.
